£50m Buxton Crescent hotel project spearheaded by Hungarian operator
Work to transform the Grade-I listed Buxton Crescent into a five-star boutique hotel is now well underway, as it has emerged that Hungarian operator Danubius Hotels Group is spearheading the ambitious project.
It was revealed in December 2015 that the historic building was being turned into a new hotel, at a cost of £50m, in a bid to put the town of Buxton back on the map both on a national and international scale.
In charge of the project is operator Danubius Hotels Group, the largest hotel group in Hungary, with 56 hotels located in Britain, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Romania.
The group’s only other UK hotel is Danubius Hotel Regents Park, near Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
When complete, Buxton Crescent will see a new 80-bedroom hotel created in the majority of the Crescent, including the striking Assembly Rooms and a thermal natural mineral water spa in the Natural Baths.
The Crescent and Thermal Spa Experience and development of the Pump Room will also provide a new indoor attraction for residents, visitors, groups and schools, while there will also be six retail units on the front ground floor.
The work is due to be finished in late 2018, with the hotel expected to open its doors in 2019.
Buxton Crescent & Thermal Spa Co Ltd will fund just under £18m with the rest coming from the public sector. Crucial to the success of the scheme is a £23.8m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund together with a £2m grant from the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership and £500k from Historic England.
High Peak Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council are each contributing £1m each.
