Janki Unveils Redesigned Matcha Bar by Rain Wu at Selfridges London

London’s leading matcha brand JENKI relaunched its matcha bar at Selfridges London on Wednesday 29th April, marking a new chapter in its presence within the department store following its original pop-up debut in 2022.

Positioned between The Foodhall and Beauty Hall on G, the redesigned space reflects a more permanent and considered expression of JENKI’s identity, translating the precision and ritual of matcha preparation into a spatial experience.

“For us, it’s always been about doing the fundamentals properly – how the matcha is sourced, how it’s prepared, and how it’s experienced,” said JENKI co-founder Claudia Boyer. “This redesign was about making that process more visible, and giving it the space it deserves.”

“Selfridges has been an important partner for us over the past few years,” she added. “It’s a space that really values quality and new ideas, and has allowed us to introduce a wider audience to matcha done properly. This next phase feels like a natural evolution of that relationship.”

Designed by London-based designer Rain Wu, the bar brings the act of whisking matcha to the forefront. Preparation is fully visible from the front counter, shifting the focus from product to process, a deliberate move that aligns with JENKI’s emphasis on quality, technique, and freshly made drinks.

Wrapped in JENKI’s signature green, the structure is formed from stained Douglas fir plywood, chosen for its pronounced grain. The timber’s natural movement echoes the swirling motion of whisked matcha, softening the bar’s presence within the high-traffic retail environment while introducing a sense of rhythm and flow.

This is paired with a terrazzo-like surface made from recycled plastic composite, used across counters and shelving. The material introduces contrast and tactility, while reinforcing a broader commitment to circular design principles, a consistent thread across Wu’s work.

The project builds on Wu’s wider body of hospitality interiors across London, including Arôme and The Salad Project, as well as previous JENKI locations in Canary Wharf and Battersea Power Station. Across these spaces, she has developed a consistent approach to material and form, combining sustainable design with a restrained, functional aesthetic.

At Selfridges, matcha preparation is positioned at the front of the bar so each drink is whisked to order in full view, reinforcing JENKI’s focus on craft, clarity, and doing the fundamentals properly.

The result is a space that foregrounds process over spectacle, offering a more transparent and intentional experience of matcha.
