Soap-maker to the (Michelin) stars strike gold at Natural Beauty Awards
Two of Cumbria’s best known luxury businesses have scooped a national accolade at the Natural Beauty Awards 2016, sponsored by The Green Parent magazine, after teaming up to create a series of hand-made spa products.
Gilpin Hotel & Lake House have partnered up with Sedbergh Soap Company to create more than 20 products to complete the ultimate spa experience at Gilpin’s Jetty Spa. Now one of the new creations – Body Scrub with Pomegranate – has beaten off some stiff competition from across the country to win a prestigious gold award in the Natural Beauty Awards.
The awards celebrate the very best in natural beauty and ethical living, and this year, the competition saw an independent panel of beauty experts, bloggers and consumers put a record-number of 500+ entries through their paces to choose winners based on a rigorous set of criteria including customer experience, effectiveness, company ethics and value for money.
The award-winning body scrub is hand-made in Cumbria from natural and organic ingredients. That includes Dead Sea salt, pomegranate oil and bamboo, to ensure it is both environmentally-friendly and suitable for sensitive skin. It is available to hotel guests as part of the Gilpin Jetty Spa Lodge Hamper or on its own.
Julia Critchley is Jetty Spa Manager at Gilpin Hotel & Lake House. She says, “It was important for us to work with a distinctly local company with the same ethos as ourselves and we’re over the moon to see a spa product we have developed together here in Cumbria gain national recognition. It’s fitting that it will be used as part of our Jetty Spa Trail, set in unspoilt woodland for the ultimate holistic experience.”
Founder of Sedbergh Soap Company, Dorthe Pratt, says, “We have won fifteen national awards since 2008, but this one is special. It is the first time we have created spa treatments to fit a very specific client brief and we were up against some stiff competition. The project to create a series of treatments for Gilpin took several months, so I am absolutely thrilled”.
She adds, “To compose a bespoke scent and 21 new products required a lot of research, which included everything from tasting the ingredients used in the food to analysing the scents of the flowers and foliage surrounding the Spa Lodges.
This award-winning body scrub is handmade in three stages, adding specific ingredients at different temperatures, so it is a complex product to make. We are delighted with the gold award, particularly for a brand new product which has never been entered in these awards before.”
Dorthe concludes, “We partner with a number of Michelin starred hotels and restaurants so we are used to working with places who have a strong identity and exacting standards. We have for example created products for Simon Rogan’s two-starred L’Enclume since 2010. They were the first to embrace our concept of ‘purity of product from kitchen to the bathroom’ ”.
