The Upper House unveils their neon-light Christmas tree inspired by a Hong Kong heritage craft
This festive season, The Upper House is aglow with a Christmas tree inspired by the iconic street signs of Hong Kong, in collaboration with architectural studio, COLLECTIVE and Streetsign HK.
The Upper House x COLLECTIVE Christmas Tree
For the past four years, The Upper House has commissioned a one-of-a-kind tree that incorporates sustainability. This year, international architecture studio, COLLECTIVE, presents a design that embraces heritage sustainability which integrates the role of culture through cultural heritage and creativity.
Inspired by Hong Kong’s iconic illuminating street signs and with the guidance of Streetsign HK, a group that advocates street signs as urban cultural heritage, COLLECTIVE reinvigorated the fading art of neon sign making with the creation of the “Doodle Tree”. Breaking with convention of 2D neon signs, the team and Mr. Wu Chi Kai, one of only three remaining local craftsmen, expertly fabricated the neon tubes into 3D form through perpetual experiments and traditional heated glass bending techniques.
“Without falling into ‘heritage kitsch’ we didn’t intend to create any legible neon signage and one will not perceive any ‘language’. We imagined a design that represents a seemingly random free flow of glowing energy, hoping to bring modernity to an object which is still a labour of heritage,” said Betty Ng, Founder of COLLECTIVE.
The “Doodle Tree” was revealed at The Upper House entrance on 18 November 2020, followed by an Up Close with the Betty Ng of COLLECTIVE, joined by Kevin Mak of Streetsign HK, and moderated by Ikko Yokoyama, Lead Curator, Design and Architecture of M Plus museum.
In the spirit of giving, The Upper House is placing the tree up for auction with all proceeds benefiting ImpactHK, a local charity dedicated to helping the homeless in Hong Kong. Interested parties can put forward their bids by emailing kristina @upperhouse.com until 31 December 2020. Starting bid from HK$40,000.
