Carluccio’s raises £2m for action against hunger
Carluccio’s restaurant group announces today that it has raised a staggering £2m for global humanitarian charity Action Against Hunger. The Italian restaurant group has been a long-standing supporter of the charity since 2007 and achieved this fundraising milestone through customer and employee-driven initiatives in an aim to provide sustainable solutions to help end the world hunger crisis.
The funds were raised by including a discretionary 50p donation on the sale of one of their best-selling dishes, Penne Giardiniera. Carluccio’s staff also undertook additional fundraising activities, included running marathons and cycling the length of the UK. Funds are currently supporting an Action Against Hunger nutrition project in Mali, where high acute malnutrition rates are cutting short thousands of young lives a year. Since the start of the partnership, Carluccio’s has also supported Action Against Hunger projects in Liberia, Zambia, Guinea, Burkina Faso and Senegal.
The partnership between Carluccio’s and Action Against Hunger began with Antonio Carluccio and, 12 years on, the eponymous Italian restaurant brand continues to raise funds for the humanitarian charity via The Antonio Carluccio Foundation. The Foundation was formed by Antonio before he passed away in November 2017, with the aim of supporting charities close to his heart – as well as Action Against Hunger, it is committed to providing the resources, training and development needed by young, otherwise disadvantaged, cooks and chefs entering the hospitality industry.
Mark Jones, CEO of Carluccio’s said: “We would like to thank all our customers for supporting Action Against Hunger and The Antonio Carluccio Foundation. We have been lucky enough to see, feel and hopefully strengthen that connection at first hand. I’m very proud of the difference we have made as a team and the generous contributions of our customers since 2007.”
Jean-Michel Grand, Executive Director of Action Against Hunger UK: “Action Against Hunger is incredibly proud of our partnership with Carluccio’s and everything it has helped us to achieve. Antonio was one of our first charity ambassadors. His passion and enthusiasm for our work continues through his legacy to raise vital funds for our programmes around the world to save the lives of malnourished children. Thanks to Antonio and Carluccio’s, we are getting one step closer to our goal of a world without hunger.”
