The weekend wedding: why couples are choosing to make celebrations last longer
For many couples, one day no longer feels like enough.
After months, sometimes years, of planning, more couples are looking for ways to slow the pace, extend the celebrations and spend more meaningful time with the people who matter most.
At Wynyard Hall, the rise of the weekend wedding is becoming part of a wider shift in how couples imagine their perfect day. While one-day celebrations remain a popular and beautiful choice, many are now exploring ways to turn their wedding into a fuller experience, with pre-wedding dinners, overnight stays, next-day brunches and relaxed time together before and after the ceremony.
Set within a private 400-acre estate in the North East, Wynyard Hall is perfectly placed for both traditional one-day weddings and extended celebrations, offering everything couples need in one location.
From religious and civil ceremonies to drinks receptions, wedding breakfasts, accommodation and post-wedding gatherings, the Grade II listed country house gives couples the chance to shape a celebration that feels personal, considered and completely their own.
With only one wedding held per day, Wynyard Hall’s exclusive-use offering means couples and their guests can enjoy the run of the house. Ceremonies can take place in the venue’s original 19th-century chapel, one of its elegant State Rooms or, during the warmer months, outside on the terrace with the lake and countryside as a backdrop.
Guests can then move effortlessly through the Hall, from a champagne reception beneath the stained-glass ceiling of the Statue Gallery to a wedding breakfast in the Conservatory, before drinks, dancing and late-night celebrations unfold in the surrounding spaces.
Emily Nicholls, Wedding Coordinator at Wynyard Hall said: “Everyone tells you their wedding day goes by in the blink of an eye, which is why more couples are beginning to think beyond a single day.
“A weekend wedding gives people the chance to arrive the evening before, settle in, enjoy time with their closest friends and family, and wake up already at the venue. After the wedding, there is no rush to leave or pack everything away. Couples can come together again the next morning, enjoy brunch and relive the moments from the day before.
“That said, a weekend wedding isn’t the only way to celebrate at Wynyard Hall. Every couple is different, and our Wedding Open Evening is a chance to explore what works for you, whether that’s a classic one-day wedding, an intimate celebration or a full weekend experience.”
For couples extending their celebrations, Wynyard Hall offers bedrooms, suites and family rooms in the main Hall, as well as four hot-tub cottages in the grounds, sleeping from six to 12 guests. Pre and post-wedding experiences can also be arranged across the estate, from golden-hour barbecues to relaxed next-day brunches and rounds of golf at the neighbouring course.
